For kids, playgrounds provide a sense of freedom, a feeling of not having a care in the world.  Ask your child about their day at school, and you’re likely to get narratives about what happened on the playground during recess.  So, why not opt for something similar for our YouthGenarians? If you haven’t heard yet, there are parks for people over 50 that are totally becoming a thing in America. NYC  offers a variety of programs for older adults to keep active, healthy, and socially engaged in their community.  The city has a Foundation for people over 60 to get heavily involved in playgrounds and to stay active and healthy.  In Californianeighborhood parks are typically not considered spaces for seniors, according to Anastasia Loukaitou-Sideris, a UCLA Professor.  While in Chicago, Ill, back in the 70’s they built their Memorial Playlot Park for older adults.

Playgrounds for older adults is a genius idea. YouthGenarians are fun seekers and creating these parks is a wonderful thing.  The playground features low impact exercise machines that promote flexibility and consists of static bikes, elliptical machines, and body flexors.Adult Playground1 The idea behind such a park is to provide a fun environment so that older adults can stay active and occupied.  Such parks are not only promoting physical health but also proving to be mentally and socially beneficial for the elderly.  Going parks where older adults can talk to people their age, and shun the feelings of loneliness and isolation, is exactly what people over the age of 50 need.

Companies like KaBOOM are branding their parks as “multigenerational” which means they can be used by people from all age groups including our YouthGenarians.  From one of their projects, KaBOOM  transformed a children’s playground in Tampa into a park for older adults ~ it’s now being used more than ever.  So far, the company has built more than 53 different parks all over the country, but there’s still a growing need of having playgrounds for older people everywhere.  If you’re a YouthGenarian, head on over to your nearest playground for older adults and unleash your inner child — have fun and enjoy every minute of playtime, you so deserve it with people your age.
